Ever been tempted to do your own electrical wiring in your home? Inner west Sydney has homes exceeding 120 years old and in many cases the wiring in these homes is sub standard and in some instances poses a safety issue.

Electrical regulations specify the type of wire required for different circuits in homes and businesses. The electrical cable needed to wire in an electric stove required a very high current rating compared to the cable used to wire in lighting circuits. Power points are a different issue again.

Are you getting the picture? Electricians need to be licensed for good reason. Electricity is a ‘must have’ in any modern household but the caveat is that it needs to be treated with respect. This means that all household wiring must be done by a qualified and licensed electrician.

The Department of Fair Trading has some useful information on electrical compliance and can be found here.
